What is UMA ?
In Hayley Kava’s family, with her three boys they use the Tongan word “uma” for kiss.
Think of the sounds of smoochy baby cheeks.
It’s often one of their children’s first words, and connects her children to their Polynesian culture
Formally, in Tongan an “uma” is a greeting where the two parties pause together cheek to cheek and share a breath, or “sacred pause”. This pause, shared breath, connection, holding, healing.
In Samoan, ‘Uma and variations on the word often means “complete” or “it is done” .
This is Uma: Complete, connected, compassionate pelvic health care
